Biography

Mike joined McGillivary Steele Elkin LLP in August 2017. He serves as Assistant Legal Counsel to the International Association of Fire Fighters. In that role, he advises the IAFF on all aspects of labor and employment law, internal union governance, and a broad range of other matters. He also provides legal guidance to the IAFF’s affiliates, and its more than 316,000 members, across the United States and Canada.

Before joining the firm, Mike practiced union-side labor and employment law in Massachusetts, focusing on the public sector. He has advised not only fire fighters, but also state troopers, police officers, transit workers, and corrections employees. He is experienced in collective bargaining, grievance and interest arbitration, unfair labor practice proceedings, and retirement proceedings, especially cases involving heart, lung, and cancer presumption statutes. Mike also is experienced in appellate and other litigation. He has represented unions both challenging and defending against overreaching employers, and filed friend-of-the-court briefs on their behalf in closely watched cases. He has secured important victories for clients in disputes about civil service law, discipline, drug testing, injury leave, management rights, municipal finance, overtime, pensions, promotions, and staffing.

Mike is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Massachusetts. He is a member of the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee, the American Bar Association’s Section on Labor and Employment Law, and the District of Columbia Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Community. He is a graduate of Suffolk University Law School (J.D. 2013) and Providence College (B.A. 2006).
