AT&T Data Breach Settlement: What You Need to Know About the $177 Million Payout
On June 20, 2025, a federal judge in Texas gave preliminary approval to a $177 million class action settlement involving AT&T data breaches. The settlement addresses claims that two major cyber security breaches compromised tens of millions of customers’ personal data
What Happened in the AT&T Data Breaches?
- March 2024: AT&T disclosed that Social Security numbers and other sensitive personal information of over 70 million current and former customers had been leaked and posted on the dark web.
- July 2024: The company revealed that hackers accessed call and text message records for nearly all customers between May 2022 and early 2023.
AT&T customers filed multiple lawsuits in response to these Data Breaches.
What Were the Lawsuits About?
Multiple lawsuits alleged that AT&T failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures to protect the data it collects from customers. Plaintiffs argued that, given AT&T’s size and prominence, the company should have anticipated being a target for cyberattacks and taken stronger precautions.
What Does the AT&T Settlement Include?
Under the proposed agreement:
- Customers whose Social Security numbers were exposed can claim up to $5,000 for documented losses.
- Customers whose call and text logs were accessed may claim up to $2,500.
- Finally, AT&T agreed to enhance its data security protocols to prevent future breaches.
Why This Matters for Consumers
This case highlights the growing importance of data protection and the legal rights of consumers when their personal information is compromised. Large corporations have a legal and ethical obligation to safeguard the data they collect.
