In the latest move to encourage salary transparency and equity, New York City will make it mandatory for companies to disclose salary ranges on all New York City-based job postings. The New York City Council recently passed a bill that would require employers to state the minimum and maximum salary for all open jobs. The bill applies to job postings, advertisements, promotions, and transfer opportunities that are based in New York City. Salary range transparency ensures that applicants know the expected salary range before applying for a job, transfer, or promotion.
The bill empowers the city’s Commission on Human Rights to issue rules and regulations to implement and enforce the law. This allows the Commission to clarify the law’s scope and applicability and provide further guidance once the law is in effect. If an employer does not post a salary range for a job posting, it will be considered an unlawful discriminatory practice under the New York Human Rights Law. The bill passed the New York City Council and is now before the mayor for signing. The law should take effect in April 2022.
