Since July 2020, private sector workers in the District of Columbia have been entitled to eight weeks of paid parental leave, six weeks for family medical leave, and six weeks for personal medical leave. The paid leave is funded by a payroll tax and a significant surplus was discovered earlier this year. As a result, starting October 1, leave to care for a newborn child, attend to a sick family member, or deal with a personal medical condition will be expanded to twelve weeks. D.C. and eleven states offer paid family leave.
Eligible employees are entitled to benefits of up to $1,000 per week, based on their salary, in wage replacement during their leave.
Legislators are also expected to expand paid leave available to D.C. government workers in the near future.
